We are getting closer to the "finish line."
Important end of the school year BOOSTERS meeting June 6 at 7:30pm in the band room.
Graduation - we are wearing our concert attire. Students are in the band room at 4:30pm; rehearse; 5:30pm in their seats in the stadium; 6:00pm graduation begins... 8:00pm graduation ends.
Band Camp - August 1-5, 2016
8am-10am - President/Vice-President/Secretary/Drum majors
10am-5pm - Everyone
Sometime in July I will be mailing the music out to the students. We are still waiting the addresses for the new members.
Due to the change of the school year calendar, band camp will need to adjust. We are going to INTENSELY work on marching technique / music and learn at least ten pages of drill and music. There will be students missing due to vacations and other responsibilities. With this (students missing this summer) in mind, tentatively band camp 2017 is July 31 - August 4, 2017. We really need a band camp that has a high-percentage of attendees.
Thank you very much for a wonderful 2015-16. We look forward to a great 2016-17.

Hello Irish Guard Family:
SECOND ANNUAL HOEDOWN THROWDOWN
Needed to send out a HUGE THANKS to all who were involved in the Second Annual HOEDOWN THROWDOWN. The amount of work that goes into that event is amazing. By sending this THANK YOU in this “director’s notes,” I may leave someone out and I do not want to leave anyone out. If you had anything to do with that event: food, drinks, prizes, auction items, set-up, clean-up entertainment, attending the event – whatever it took to get the job done --- THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. I do hope there will be a Third Annual HOEDOWN THROWDOWN. It is really fun! And… we need fun.
WINTERGUARD / WINTERPERCUSSION
Great season for both ensembles!! For the past several years, we have included these two ensembles in the end of the year concert. We are doing this again for this year. May 2; 9 guard meets at 6pm-7:30pm On May 16 – guard will meet at 6pm-7pm; followed by election of drum major and guard captain… Percussion is going to meet during lunch on those Mondays after FMP. Concert is May 23rd in the SPORTS COMPLEX at 6:30pm.
We do have a meeting on April 18 7:30pm in the band room. We are looking for candidates for the board members. Please, if interested let Mrs. Lutz know. Our music program really needs to continue to be an advocate for music education. We need parents. Every successful music program is made up of: students / teacher …. PARENTS! Please attend the April 18 meeting. These next three meetings (April, May, June) are important.
MAY 16TH REHEARSAL 7PM-9PM (REHEARSAL FOR ALLLLLLL BAND/JAZZ BAND/GUARD STUDENTS)
At this rehearsal, we will be having DRUM MAJOR AUDITIONS as well as band / guard officers elections. We had close to TEN STUDENTS at our first Thursday Lunch DRUM MAJOR session. At these Thursday DRUM MAJOR lunch sessions, the students are being taught by DAVIS ZAMBOANGA assisted by the three other drum majors what it takes to be a DRUM MAJOR – great idea by Davis. Encourage your child to run for DRUM MAJOR, COLOR GUARD CAPTAIN, and THE OTHER BAND COUNCIL OFFICERS.
SEVENTH ANNUAL JAZZIN’ FOR A CURE
May 20th in our theater 6:30pm. Please write this on your calendar. All the proceeds go to the AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY & A.L.S. ASSOCIATION. More information to follow!!
END OF THE YEAR CONCERT
End Of The Year Concert is May 23rd 6:30pm in the Sports Complex. It starts at 6:30pm because we have all sorts of recognition to handout, as well as, music / guard performances!!
IN THE HEIGHTS
For the first time in MANY YEARS, the performing arts department is producing a full-blown musical! Lots of work has been given to this production. We would love to see the community’s support. We want to continue to grow a culture where we support ALL ARTS!! The performances are: APRIL 21, 22, 23, 24 at 7pm and APRIL 23, 24 at 2pm. More information is on www.dhsirishguard.org
I have heard some “stress” about the lack of students being able to attend band camp. No stress coming from me. I will work with the students who are able to attend. With DUSD going to a new schedule, yes that has changed things just a bit. But, to “stress” about the attendance? Not much we can do about it. Go into this with the understanding that it is what it is: AUGUST 1 – 5, 2016 9am-5pm. We will make the best of it.
CLASSES FOR 2016-17
As of April 17, 2016 7:30AM, I have not received my rosters for next year. I do appreciate the interest in “How is marching band / PE going to work?” “How is jazz band going to work?” Just want to clarify my lack of answers / direction. Until the counselors give me the rosters and until the district decides whether or not the district will hire an orchestra teacher, I am unable to give solid answers to your questions regarding the music classes. Today, the answers would by guesses / hypothetical. I would like to have the information to you by mid-May, but that is “would like to have…” Thanks for your patience.
MEAT SALE IS APRIL 30 / MAY 1 … MORE INFORMAITON www.dhsirishguard.org
As always, questions, comments, concerns, and yes, even a compliment, I can be reached at email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org;
Hello Irish Guard Family:
Well, this DIRECTOR’S NOTES gives me a taste of reality following a MAGICAL TRIP TO IRELAND!! I have so much to say, but I do know that many of you are too busy to read; so this will be brief. The amount of words and quality of words are coming from my heart… so please slow down the “how come is he is so short with his reflections of Ireland?”
The word “awesome” is overused. However, in this case, when one takes over fifty students to another country, along with just as many or close to as many family members and every day was better than the previous day? That was awesome. Our tour guides, Eunan & Muriel, EXCELLENT. There were so many great memories. Seeing the Portmarnock & Loreto students’ reaction to the DHS band’s performance was great and special for our students. On our way home in the Bus in California, I received the following message from one of our tour guides, Eunan: Paul, I’m delighted to tell you that DHS won best turned out band and participants in the Bray St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Congratulations from Muriel and myself. WOW. Way to go!!
So, let me just say again, THANK YOU MRS. EVERTS & MRS. LAMPI FOR THE AMOUNT OF WORK YOU GAVE TOWARDS THIS TRIP. Thank you to all the parents who did so much for our students prior to the trip and during the trip. Chaperones seriously took their job taking care of the students. Proud of the way they accepted their responsibility. Many of the parents who were there to enjoy the event / travelled with the World Projects group – never hesitated in helping move equipment. For example, I walk into the Portmarnock Gymnasium and there were Dublin High School Parents putting away music stands / chairs / instruments. SUPER!! Success. We had a successful trip. THANK YOU!! Please have your students attend school on Monday, March 21, 2016.
Final thank you to the parents / friends who helped with the Dublin, CA St. Patrick’s Day Weekend. We heard the weather was horrible. Thank you weathering the weather that weekend.
BOOSTERS MEETING IS MONDAY MARCH 21, 2016 at 7:30pm.
Winter percussion Competition is March 26th
Instrumental Music Concert is 7pm on March 28th.
Choral Music Concert is 7pm on March 29th.
April 16th is SECOND ANNUAL “HOE DOWN – THROW DOWN.” Great fundraiser. More information is on www.dhsirishguard.org
As always, any questions / comments / concerns / and yes even a compliment, email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org, EMERGENICES 209-642-2651 (cell phone; numbers will be screened).
Enjoy these videos from the trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkSdd-V2gcA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Ca3xxCC7A There are many more videos online. I do hope we will see those videos shared on www.dhsirishguard.org as well, as photos. SO WONDERFUL.
Hello Irish Guard Family:
I hope all of you are enjoying or enjoyed your THREE-DAY WEEKEND. This “director’s notes” is written on Sunday, February 14, 2016, at 7:05am…
LYNBROOK WINTERGUARD COMPETITION
Woke-up early to check scores and…very pleased to see an eleven-point increase since the last performance (January 30th). If you are interested in seeing the scores, please visit www.theccgc.org Also, very happy to see the costumes arrived just in time for the show. Look forward to continued growth in the program. The next show is at February 27th at Granite Bay HS. I do plan to attend that show. Thank you all for your work!
FINAL UPDATE OF AMADOR VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ FESTIVAL
Just a reminder that both the jazz band and student-led jazz combo received straight ones. The “unanimous superior” was the second “unanimous superior” earned by both ensembles! A first for the jazz band program! SO HAPPY FOR THE STUDENTS. The final update? JAZZ BAND EARNED FIRST PLACE IN THEIR DIVISION and SECOND PLACE OVERALL FOR THE FESTIVAL: 276-Foothill; 275-Dublin
There are added events for jazz band: MARCH 2ND “Eighth Grade Night.” And May 26th – Tri-Valley Award Night for Athletics sponsored in part by TV30.
FEBRUARY 16, 2016 IRELAND MEETINGS (there is a rehearsal that night)
BOTH MEETINGS ARE IN THE LIBRARY. 7pm – Chaperones; 7:30pm – All the adults who are going on the trip. Beginning February 19, 2016 the band AND COLOR GUARD MEMBERS will have LUNCH-TIME REHEARSAL!! We have February 19 / 26; March 4.
On February 13, the color guard captain and another member going on the trip were given the music to use for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. They are encouraged to use part of their winterguard show for the choreography. Be nice to see the students develop their own routine.
FEBRUARY 20TH NCPA PERCUSSION COMPETITION hosted by DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL
We really need to see some folks sign-up for this event. The money goes to the ENTIRE MUSIC PROGRAM! Just because it says “percussion” does not mean the money earned goes just to “percussion.” For us to see the music program grow in quantity & quality it does take $$$. We are looking at a very tight budget to end 2015-16 and start 2016-17. EVERY PENNY IS GOING TO HELP! Please visit www.dhsirishugard.org and sign-up. Students can sign-up too and get community service hours: WIN – WIN!!
February 24 – DISTRICT String & Jazz Night
7:00pm-7:45pm will be the orchestra performance in the theater. There will be close to 130 4th/5th graders; 55-Fallon students; 18-Wells/DHS students. Gonna be crowded = YAAAAY!! Fifteen-minute intermission and change of audience. Then 8pm-9pm Jazz Bands will perform. LOOKING FORWARD TO A FANTASTIC EVENING
February 25 – District BAND Night
So, there is a lot going on for the DUSD MAINTENANCE department that day. I have volunteered to use my truck and pull the band trailer to collect stands / instruments for that evening’s concert. I have had three parents volunteer to help me (SUPER J ). We could use more. I will start at 8:45am that day (Feb. 25) and should be done by 2pm-ish… Please let me know if you are able to help keep the 35-year tradition alive and well. THANK YOU!! email@example.com
MARCHING BAND / PE
The plan is for this to begin for the 2016-17 school year. I did have a parent or two inform me that there is no MARCHING BAND / PE listed on the “Course Selection” sheet; news to me. The administration has been informed of this oversight. Please know that we are planning to move forward with MARCHING BAND / PE. Thank you for the support and for letting me know.
WOW!! What a terrific performance at the Campana Jazz Festival hosted by Amador Valley High School. I could not be more happy for the jazz band and the student-lead jazz combo. Thank you to the students for all the work they have given thus far. Their hard work and dedication to a new level of excellence is seen in these results.
NCPA at DHS
Please visit www.dhsirishguard.org and sign-up / volunteer for the February 20, 2016 NCPA percussion competition hosted by us. As of the February 8, 2016, there were as many as 55 available opportunities to show your support for the DHS MUSIC DEPARTMENT. There are jobs for adults and students. Students can earn community service hours for this.
As of today (Tuesday, February 9th), for our annual district BAND concert (February 25th), we need help moving chairs / music stands / percussion instruments from the elementary / middle schools to DHS. I have a truck that is able to pull the trailer. There are many events happening that day and the district needs our help in moving equipment. Let's find solutions for problems. Looks like I will take the day-off as well to help move equipment. If you are interested in helping me / us, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will start organizing the group. Timeline - 8am-12pm (I hope) FEBRUARY 25TH. We want it to be done by 2pm. Thank you. AGAIN, PLEASE CONTACT me AT email@example.com and I will keep folks up to date for what is happening.
AGAIN, ONE MORE TIME...CONGRATULATIONS TO THE JAZZ BAND AND JAZZ COMBO. For the first time EVER, the Dublin High School Jazz Band and Jazz Combo received Unanimous SUPERIORS at the Folsom Jazz Festival AND the Campana Jazz Festival (AVHS). Could NOT be more happy for the students. What an amazing ensemble.
Hello Irish Guard Family:
Hope all is going great for you. 2016 has had a great start for the Dublin High School Music Department!
JAZZ BAND – Folsom Jazz Festival, January 23, 2016
For the first time in over ten years (if not longer), our jazz band received straight ones at a jazz festival. Not only did the jazz band receive straight ones, but the STUDENT-DIRECTED jazz combo received straight ones, as well. Both groups did fantastic jobs. Now, onto February 6th Amador Valley HS Jazz Festival: jazz band at 8:50am and jazz combo at 10:20am. We would like to see the high school jazz band/combo members stay and support Wells Middle School Jazz Band / Combo. There are also WONDERFUL clinics for the students. Students can improve by attending clinics.
MARCHING BAND / COLOR GUARD PE – APPROVED ON JANUARY, 26, 2016
First, I want to thank all of the folks who supported this goal! Since 2008-09 school year, many of us wanted to see the return of this “course.” Thanks to the final push over the goal line by many folks, there will be MARCHING BAND /COLOR GUARD PE course offered at Dublin High School. “How is this going to work, Mr. Everts?” Well, now that it has been approved by the school board, the nitty-gritty will happen. I do want to thank everyone for NO EMAILS asking, “How is it going to work?” Understanding that first the course needs to be approved and then we can work to successfully implement is appreciated. The importance of this course being approved cannot be overemphasized. With the growth of academies, a dynamic choral program, the introduction of orchestra, we need to find a niche for the band program to continue to be one of the parts of the elective program at Dublin High School.
For the 2015-16 school years, there were 36-out-of-112 eighth graders who signed-up for the high school band. When I asked one of the juniors last week, “Hey, is ____ your sister?”
“She is doing band, right?”
“Uh, no. She is a really good violin player and wants to be in the high school orchestra.”
We see the growth of the music program and we want the band to also share in that growth. Many of us believe that having MARCHING BAND / COLOR GUARD PE will help us see the band grow. Thank you again for all who made this happen!
Great first rehearsal!! Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights 7pm-9pm. COLOR GUARD/MARCHING BAND REHEARSAL WILL BE ON FRIDAYS DURING LUNCH (to work around winterguard schedule). First lunch time rehearsal will be FRIDAY AT LUNCH FEBRUARY 19TH, followed by February 26th and March 4th DURING LUNCH…. 12:10PM… Meeting for chaperons February 16th at 7pm; Meeting FOR ALL THE PARENTS OF STUDENTS GOING TO IRELAND 7:30pm. BOTH FEBRUARY 16TH MEETINGS IN LIBRARY!
WINTER GUARD / PERCUSSION
January 30, 2016 was the first competition for both groups: guard at JAMES LOGAN HS and percussion at MOUNTAIN HOUSE HS. Both groups had solid first performances. I am happy to see how many band students are participating in both extra-curricular groups. Out of 125 band members, there are over forty band members in both groups (combined). For information regarding these groups, please first contact the directors (Mr. Gomez, Guard & Mr. Van Loben Sels, Percussion). I am next in line. Keep-up the great work! Also, thank you parents / volunteers who are supporting both groups.
NCPA PERCUSSION COMPETITION AT DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL – FEBRUARY 20, 2016
We need parent volunteers BAND STUDENTS and friends for this competition. We have as many as twenty-seven percussion groups planning to attend this event. THIS IS A TEAM EFFORT meaning…WE NEED ALL THE BAND / GUARD STUDENTS’ AND THEIR FAMILIES’ SUPPORT! Please sign-up to help with this important fundraiser. SAVE THE DATE: FEBRUARY 20, 2016 http://www.dhsirishguard.org/invitational.html
On January 19, 2016 the boosters officers / instructors had a mid-year budget meeting. With the growth of winterguard / winterpercussion groups (winterpercussion growth in the sense that this is now an extra-curricular group; not part of the school day) and the trip to Ireland, we needed to look at how we are doing financially. We are doing well. However, not great. We will be able to pay our bills this year. Following the trip to Ireland, we need to see the APRIL 16, 2016 SECOND ANNUAL “HOEDOWN” fundraiser BE AS STRONG, IF NOT STRONGER, THAN LAST YEAR. We are also looking at a “crowd-source” fundraiser. We want to begin the 2016-17 financially ‘sound.’
Understandably, there is a drop in the number of donations this 2015-16 school year. We are doing all we can not to touch the “reserves.” Yet, we need to pay the bills. Please do attend the monthly boosters’ meetings and get the information first hand. Bottom line: we are doing well and we need to continue to improve our finances – every group should be so fortunate to say, “we are doing well and we need to improve.” Next boosters meeting is February 8 at 7:30pm in band room.
Yes, with the start of school being moved to August 15th that has impacted our BAND CAMP. I have asked for our BAND CAMP to be August 1-5, 2016, 8am-4pm. We are waiting for a response. When we know for sure the dates of band camp, we will let ya know. I do know there are many of you with vacation plans and such, so I / WE will (as all of us will) need to be patient with this change. To make up for “lost” time, we are looking at adding Friday nights (POSSIBLY August 19th; August 26th; and September 16th) - depends on football schedule. The UNDERSTANDABLE ABSENCES for this Summer needs to be made up somehow and Friday nights may be one way. And here is the information for next year’s field show… HEROES AND VILLAINS http://www.projectrisemusic.com/index.php/marching-band/60 I gave the band SIX SHOWS to choose from and the majority selected HEROES AND VILLAINS. Going to be fantastic.
As always, any questions / comments / concerns and yes, compliments, please contact me firstname.lastname@example.org or 209-642-2651 (cell phone – will screen phone calls)
Hello Irish Guard Family:
Well, I think January 7th is probably the last day for the “Happy New Year” to be used? So, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
WINTERGUARD / PERCUSSION
Thank you to all the students who have chosen to be a part of these two extra-curricular activities. We have close to sixty DHS students participating!! FANTASTIC. Those two ensembles need to have parent support. There are no busses for these two groups. We need parent drivers which means -- PAPERWORK. Please do offer to help with transportation and please do your best to make “donations” to help these two ensembles have a season. On January 29th, you have the opportunity to see these two wonderful groups at the annual FAMILY NIGHT hosted at Fallon. More information to follow…
Amazing AMAAAAZING job by Mrs. Everts & Mrs. Lampi! These two ladies have given AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF WORK towards the trip (interesting factoid – neither lady has a child going on the trip). Thank you ladies!! So, to prepare for the ONCE IN A LIFETIME trip we need to rehearse. We have done our best to plan these rehearsals with the WINTERGUARD/PERCUSSION rehearsal schedule (a “good” challenge, btw) in mind. Beginning TUESDAY NIGHT January 26th 7pm-9pm and Fridays at lunch. This gives us six Tuesday nights (maybe five due to BINGO) and Fridays to prepare for this ONCE IN A LIFETIME TRIP. The last several Fridays DURING LUNCH of February and beginning in March will be MARCHING BAND / COLOR GUARD REHEARSAL. There are several color guard members attending the trip and we want the color guard to be prepared, as well as the band, for the St. Patrick’s Day parade in BRAY, IRELAND!!
For the first time in six years we are going to the Folsom High School Jazz Festival. You can get more information for the festival at www.folsommusic.org. We are looking at an early departure. We perform in the 8am hour. We need to be there at 7:30am. Folsom is North-East of Sacramento. GREAT JAZZ FESTIVAL!! The jazz band and STUDENT LED jazz combo are performing. Please visit www.folsommusic.org website. Due to finals being that week, we are going to have a special two-hour rehearsal (includes a lunch) on FRIDAY, JANUARY 22ND… the students will need to bring six dollars on Friday January 22nd to help pay for the lunch. The Folsom Jazz Festival is January 23, 2016. Followed by the February 6, 2016 Amador Valley High School Jazz Festival.
Boosters meeting 7:30pm January 11th; Bingo January 12 doors open at 6:30pm;close at 7pm. February 20th is going to be the DUBLIN NCPA PERCUSSION COMPETITION. We need all the parents and students to save that day for volunteering-spirit!
As always, questions / comments / concerns / compliments, email@example.com or for EMERGENCIES (will screen calls) 209-642-2651. THANK YOU! I do love communication.
"It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end." Ernest Hemingway.
THANK YOU TO THE CLASS OF 2016! What a terrific four years you have had in the marching band and color guard! Many of you have been in music since FOURTH GRADE and now comes your senior year. I would love you to continue to make music / be in color guard at the college level - no doubt. But, this for some is the end of marching band and color guard. So many achievements during the four years. We are not done yet Class of 2016! I would like to remind you to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND. Come June 2016 - how do you want us to remember you? FINISH STRONG.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE STUDENTS. We continue to ask more from you because we want more FOR YOU!! Many of you are helping move this program forward. Again, being a DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL BAND & COLOR GUARD MEMBER is a challenge (for many reasons :) AND LIFE IS FULL OF CHALLENGES. I am very confident that those students who CHOOSE to stay in the program all four years ... will be ready to have a good life as adults. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU STUDENTS!!
THANK YOU TO MS. CROCKER & MS. LARSEN! Two freshmen parents (ONE BAND & ONE COLOR GUARD) member! You did a fantastic job feeding over 120 people (a small school) FIVE TIMES! We are blessed to have your spirit and work ethic.
THANK YOU TO MS. BRASSEA and those who helped Ms. Brassea! Being the uniform mom can be a THANKLESS job. It can be frustrating to see how the students handle their uniforms, but in the end, there is Ms. Brassea making sure that every uniform is cared for. Just so you know... each uniform is over $450! Ms. Brassea AND COMPANY have an incredibly important job. We need those uniforms to last AT LEAST TEN YEARS! Great job.
THANK YOU TO MS. LUTZ! Your leadership as the boosters president is SHINING through! There needs to be someone at the top that is able to lead and you are doing the job.
THANK YOU TO INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF - SPECIFICALLY MR. VAN LOBEN SELS. We are blessed to have Mr. Van Loben Sels and all his contacts. He is helping build an amazing group of folks to work with your sons and daughters. The program took huge steps this year and he is one of THE reasons for those step. I am very impressed with these people. I hope to CONTINUE to see the staff grow in quantity and quality. Special thanks to DHS CLASS OF 2012 ALUMS - RYLE WONG & JON HUR. They both have been with me since their Freshman year (2008-09). So, if y'all want to know how to get along with Mr. Everts? Those two have been able to be with me for EIGHT YEARS!! Thanks Mr. Wong & Mr. Hur!!
THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARENT VOLUNTEERS and ALL VOLUNTEERS! Talk about the largest growth!! One of the positives of doing field shows is the amount of parents / volunteers needed to make the field show happen. We must have had anywhere from 30-40 parents ACTIVELY INVOLVED in this year's production. Never had props before and that was very important to the students this year. Marching band and color guard are two of the few groups where parents are actually a part of the SCORE!! There are no parents playing a game!! But, in marching band and color guard?? YOU ARE IN THE "GAME!" I hope to CONTINUE to see this group grow in quantity and quality.
Most of the above are "professional-thank-yous..." A "personal-thank-you"... as with all families... we lose important people in our lives. As I have announced to the classes and shared with many parents (in preparation and understanding my possible absences to help the family), the Everts family is on that path to losing an important family member to Cancer. There is a sad irony that we sponsor a benefit concert for ALS & CANCER. I cannot and will not be able to give enough THANKS to those folks who are rallying around me during this "life-moment." Those who have had close family members deal with Cancer, God bless you. At the start of this "journey," I better understand your "journey." So, thank you...
FINAL THANK YOU TO Mrs. Everts & Katy! We know what it is like to be the spouse and daughter of a high profile position on a high school campus! People can offer their empathy (and in several cases "sympathy") which we need and appreciate, but only the three of us know and have felt the thorns amongst those roses. You both remind me there are ROSES AMONGST THE THORNS. Thank you very much for your non-conditional love & support. You are very special
Well, that's it...onto the next chapters: WINTER GUARD; WINTER PERCUSSION; FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE -- A CONCERT OR TWO; FOLSOM / AVHS JAZZ FESTIVALS and IRELAND!! What a program all of us continue to help build so others will enjoy.
Band/Guard photos are next Wednesday... students are to be in uniform / ready to go at 7pm... should not be that long. However, IT CAN BE LONG BECAUSE, THANKFULLY, THERE ARE MANY STUDENTS WHO WANT PICTURES!!
Hello Irish Guard Family:
THERE IS ONE COMPETITION LEFT. Please go to www.dhsirishguard.org and get information regarding the November 14, 2015 competition at James Logan High School. Next to state championships (which we are NOT attending), this is the largest WBA competition. Going to be exciting. (November 18 @ 7pm is BAND/GUARD PHOTO IN THEATER!)
TREMENDOUS! Loved how the season went. Senior night as touching as always for me! Class of 2016 has done an amazing job SO FAR (smile). Thank you to all the parents / volunteers who helped take care of the students at the games. We had many compliments about the organization. If there is a HOME play-off game, we do plan to play at that home play-off game. The first play-off game is November 13. The away play-off games are a possibility if we can get buses. Driving cars is not an option. Too many chances for folks to get into accidents. But, if we can get buses, I would love for the band to go to the play-offs. In the 2011 football season, FANTASTIC FUN GOING TO THOSE PLAY-OFF GAMES!!
DHS IRISH GUARD BAND COMPETITION
AMAZING! At the November 7 competition, I received compliments from fellow band directors and WBA judges! Such a great feeling to hear well EARNED compliments. Under the leadership of Mrs. Lutz, you all did a terrific job. Cannot thank you all enough for the work / hours put into hosting such a fantastic competition. We hope to be able to host our SIXTH annual next year. The date changes from year-to-year. Some time in March or April, we should know if we get to host a 2016 WBA competition.
VETERAN'S DAY PARADE
SPECIAL! Looking back on that weekend (a week later), I cannot believe how much we accomplished. WE LOVE THAT PARADE! Again, so many compliments for our organization. I do enjoy the "Pleasanton / Dublin - thing." To see the change in the communities is "entertaining." "That's Dublin High School's Band? Wow...they're good!" HUGE SMILE FROM THE DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL BAND DIRECTOR. Again, thank you to all the parents / volunteers who made that such a great day. What is a parade without a band? QUIET (smile) There is something special about bands and parades. The DHS parents who were there noticed how much a band adds to a parade. A VERY SPECIAL DAY. We will definitely look at making that parade an annual event. There is much potential to see that event turn into something even more special with maybe a "get-together" between Dublin & Foothill bands at the end of the parade. Just a thought...
NOVEMBER 7, 2015 COMPETITION
EXCITING! "Firsts" continue to happen for us this year: FIRST time we have had a higher music score than AVHS; FIRST time our brass has placed at a competition; FIRST time we finished ahead of more than one high school in our division; FIRST time we have RECEIVED first place in any category at a WBA competition (FIRST PLACE PERCUSSION)! Congratulations to Mr. Van Loben Sels, his staff and the percussion section. They do put in tremendous amount of time in getting better!
You can see the scores at www.westernbands.org The one area we are seeing "low" scores: INDIVIDUAL MUSIC. There is a judge on the field with them and he/she can hear the students individual performance. This week, rest of the school year, and NEXT YEAR, we need to make it a band goal to see more practicing outside of the class period. As long as we are going to have GAEL PERIOD, we need to make use of that GAEL PERIOD. I would love to see the students practice their individual parts at least seventy-minutes a WEEK! During the class period, the students have anywhere form five-to-ten minutes of individual practice time. With one week left, we hope to see them make a final push to improve as individual musicians and bring their improvements to the band / guard.
WINTERGUARD / WINTERPERCUSSION
We would love to see students from the MUSIC DEPARTMENT participate in these two fun groups. Have your child talk to a color guard member or percussion member to find out the details.
NOVEMBER 9 - BAND BOOSTERS MEETING 7:30PM in Band Room
Continues to go smoothly. Just a couple of PASSPORTS need to be taken care. Please realize DEADLINES ARE DEADLINES AND THEY SERVE A PURPOSE. We have had generous donations, including from the SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION & DPIE!!
Just a final thank you as we approach our final band review. Being in the Dublin High School Marching Band & Color Guard takes a level of commitment that many other Dublin High School groups do not expect. Can one imagine hearing a good performance at a "B" level? Eight out of ten notes correct? BY EACH MUSICIAN? Therefore, we listen to a 120 piece band making over 240 mistakes in a given performance? There are not too many groups on campus that "practice" (WE "REHEARSE") twice a week and then go compete. In fact, there are not too many DHS groups that the day of a "game" have a "practice." If the football team had our schedule (FOR EXAMPLE: offensive line practice on Monday; running backs on Tuesday; quarterbacks on Wednesday; wide receivers on Thursday; FRIDAY IS THE GAME - THE FIRST TIME THEY ALL PLAYED TOGETHER), I bet our football team would have interesting results. The only time all of us meet together is WEDNESDAY NIGHT / SATURDAY; that's it! And then we are asked to have exceptional performances? AMAZING WHAT OUR STUDENTS CAN ACCOMPLISH. Thank you to all who are choosing to make band/color guard important in their lives; giving it the time it needs to earn respect. We have had a very positive and successful marching season. END STRONG THIS WEEK.
