Hello Irish Guard Family:
When there is so much positive happening (ROSES AMONGST THE THORNS), hard to put into a brief email!!
FOOTHILL BAND REVIEW
Memories and Music! That is what we are attempting to create for our students!! Sure. Life is full of bad memories and bad music. But, attitude is what makes things good or bad. There was much good on Saturday. Even before I share just a few of the results, there was much to celebrate.
1. How about all the parents who volunteered to drive students to and from the event?! Filled out paperwork. Made up sign-up sheets. Took amazing organizational skills to SAFELY transport over 120 students.
2. How about feeding over 140 people? LEAD BY TWO FRESHMEN PARENTS - I WILL ADD!
3. How about the WELL OVER 30-40 parents we are seeing every week STEP-UP to move equipment and build equipment?! How inspiring it is to see "today's" parents making time for their children AND OTHER FOLKS' CHILDREN.
4. How about the talented instructional staff we are seeing evolve much to the thanks of Mr. Van Loben Sels? An instructional staff that I am building trust with that I can leave a rehearsal and attend two former band students' wedding? By the way, you can only imagine what it is like to see two former students marry one another while sitting next to Mr. Bertelson! You can only imagine that once in a lifetime moment. I cannot thank the instructors and the parents for stepping-up (a lot of "stepping-up" -- must be marching season (wink). Lots of tears for me at that wedding!
5.. And the final how abouts: Twenty Six Bands at the competition: FOURTH PLACE OUT OF TWENTY-SIX - MUSIC SCORE!! SIXTH PLACE OUT OF TWENTY SIX - GENERAL EFFECT SCORE!! TWELFTH OUT OF TWENTY SIX - VISUAL EFFECT!! THIRTEENTH OUT OF TWENTY-SIX - COLOR GUARD SCORE!! TENTH OUT OF TWENTY-SIX - PERCUSSION!! So, Overall - OUT OF TWENTY SIX HIGH SCHOOLS, DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL CAME IN EIGHTH WITH A SCORE OF 90.420!! But, probably what the students will remember the most: OUT OF TWENTY-SIX HIGH SCHOOLS, OUR BRASS SECTION CAME IN SECOND PLACE--ONE POINT BEHIND FIRST PLACE. Great job everyone!!
I cannot emphasize enough: THE FEELING PRIOR TO HEARING THE OUTSTANDING RESULTS WAS OVER THE TOP POSITIVE! We need to continue to find some sort of balance between how we feel about a performance versus what the judges say about our performance. Sure. It feels great to see/hear these scores, but PRIOR TO KNOWING THE JUDGES' OPINIONS it felt great to hear the students be so happy with how they did compared to the night before at the football game, or even a week later following their first performance of the year.
Following a great day, there can be a let down. LET'S NOT LET THAT HAPPEN. There are still students playing wrong notes. There are still students going to wrong spots; picking-up wrong equipment; etc. We now leave NCBA and return to WBA! It will be interesting to see how the WBA judges' comments will reflect TWO WEEKS OF WORK! We have a ways to go on our journey. "Yesterday ended last night." So, cherish this "victory" and then move forward. SUCH A GREAT DAY!!
TUESDAY NIGHT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
Thanks to Mrs. Everts checking the school board meeting agenda on a regular basis, we have learned that there will be discussion (NOT ACTION -- discussion) in regards to MARCHING BAND / PE! I am hearing all sorts of "stuff" from parents about how this is all going to work. Please...we haven't even received the go-ahead that this is going to happen. Gosh, I didn't even know there was going to be discussion about this issue. Before we all come to conclusions on how "Mr. Everts is going to make this work," please, go to the meeting Tuesday night. Please have your child go to the meeting Tuesday night. Bring their homework. If for any reason, learn how this all works. IT IS THEIR EDUCATION. I would love to see them more involved in the "goings-on" with their education.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT FINAL DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL BAND REVIEW MEETING 6:30pm
FRIDAY NIGHT SENIOR NIGHT AT THE FOOTBALL GAME
We would love to see all twenty-two STUDENTS have their CLOSE FAMILY MEMBERS (father/mother/siblings) ESCORT THEM DURING THE HALF-TIME CEREMONY. I realize there are grandparents / aunts / uncles / Godparents / special friends! Be considerate. With twenty-two band/color guard students IN ADDITION TO CHEERLEADERS BEING INTRODUCED in fifteen minutes ..... we need IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS. As always, I do look forward to seeing all the parents and even after four years, meeting parents that night. "What time should we be there, Mr. Everts?" Please go to the game. It is a fun activity. The game is scheduled to start at 7pm.
October 31st - DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL BAND REVIEW
We need the students to be at the high school by 11am for a 11am-1pm rehearsal. We would like the students to stay on campus to be available to help set-up and/or do THEIR HOMEWORK. The band room will be a QUIET STUDY HALL. I do understand there is some "stress" about the homework getting done this coming weekend. Therefore, all I can do that day (as well as encourage the students to efficiently use their time at home and GAEL PERIOD) is offer a QUIET STUDY HALL for your child. I do hope you will encourage your child to go into the band room where I and/or Mrs. Everts will be monitoring that room. And then at 4pmish...we start to get ready for the competition. More details will be on the website.
November 1st - PLEASANTON VETERAN'S DAY PARADE
When a veteran comes into the band room and says, "Mr. Everts. Foothill is in Anaheim that weekend and Amador Valley cannot be there. Will you please be the band in the parade?" I understand the following concern: "But, Mr. Everts we have a football game on Friday. We host a band review Saturday and now you want to add a parade?!" I have heard the angst. Every decision a leader makes causes angst (or even, "Good job Mr. Everts. We need to support our veterans". Yet, I also realize how much those veterans have given-up so we can have a football game, enjoy a band review and enjoy PUBLIC EDUCATION. So, we need to be at Dublin High School at 11:15am November 1st and get dressed in uniform and shuttle the students over to the Start of the 1pm Parade. More information to follow.
Thank you very much for all you do to support your and other folks' children. Let's continue to do all we can to use the 101% Principle: AGREE ON ONE THING (help our students) AND GIVE IT 100%!
