Jazz Band
The development of jazz throughout the last century is an integral part of the history of this country and is considered the only art form that was solely created in the US. The purpose of this course is to integrate the historical, theoretical, and stylistic components of jazz to create a capable and knowledgeable musician. The genre of jazz includes and incorporates many other styles of music. It demands a great deal of versatility and adaptability in musical situations. This course will expand the student’s musicianship so that they will feel more comfortable participating in a variety of musical settings by including Latin, bebop, swing, and modal jazz. Because jazz is an aural art and a jazz musician’s most valuable tool is their ears, an emphasis will be placed on ear training, improvisation, and aural skills.
